House Alterations in Merchiston
This project involves the creation of a big open plan family room and kitchen on the lower ground floor of a Victorian house in Edinburgh's Merchiston area.
The floor, which is situated at garden level, previously consisted of four dark and underused rooms and the owners of the house mainly used the two floors above. Removing the subdividing walls and replacing them with slender steel beams and pillars has meant that a large family area has been created for the day-to-day use of the family.
The rear of the house has been opened up to the garden with new glass double doors, which means the garden is now directly connected to the main living space of the house. The interior is modern and minimalist, as a contrast to the Victorian detailing of the floors above, with oak flooring, granite worktops , contemporary kitchen and a woodburning stove as a focal point to the space.
