House restoration, Murrayfield

Ormelie, a rambling Murrayfield Mansion, was converted into several flats after the War. This particular flat contained some fine rooms, including the original billiard room but the rooms had been much altered over the years and the middle of the flat consisted of a dark warren of corridors, passages and level changes.

To simplify the layout, the internal subdividing walls have now been taken away, the different levels unified and the kitchen was moved into the centre of the flat.

The billiard room was reinstated to its original proportions and the decorative roof trusses revealed by removing the lowered ceilings. Cornices and doors were restored and new oak floors and recycled maple floors laid.
